Fetal Non-Stress Test (NST)

$100 self-pay per examination

At Lakeland Birth & Gynecology, we offer fetal non-stress testing (NST) to help assess your baby's well-being during pregnancy.

An NST is a noninvasive test that monitors your baby's heart rate and how it responds to movement. This testing may be recommended when additional fetal surveillance is medically indicated.

Testing is performed and interpreted by a Certified Nurse-Midwife.

What's included

This $100 examination includes:

  • External electronic fetal monitoring
  • Assessment of fetal heart rate patterns and reactivity
  • Approximately 20 to 40 minutes of monitoring, with additional time when clinically appropriate
  • Clinical interpretation of the tracing
  • Written documentation of findings
  • Recommendations for follow-up when indicated
  • Ability to share results with your prenatal care provider, with appropriate authorization

Who may benefit

An NST may be recommended for certain pregnancy-related conditions or concerns, including:

  • Gestational diabetes or preexisting diabetes
  • Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy
  • Certain high-risk pregnancies
  • Post-term pregnancy surveillance
  • Other medical indications requiring fetal monitoring

NSTs are generally initiated around 32 weeks for many indications, although earlier testing may be appropriate based on individual clinical circumstances. The need for testing and appropriate timing are determined through clinical assessment.

Prenatal care requirements

  • Proof of established prenatal care is not required, but ongoing prenatal care is strongly encouraged.
  • You do not have to be established with Lakeland Birth & Gynecology to request an NST.
  • If you receive prenatal care elsewhere, you may request testing and have your finalized results shared with your OB/GYN or midwife.
  • NSTs do not replace comprehensive prenatal care.

Safety first: NST appointments are intended for scheduled fetal surveillance and are not a substitute for emergency pregnancy evaluation. If you are experiencing decreased fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, severe headache, or other concerning symptoms, seek immediate medical assessment rather than submitting a routine appointment request.

Abnormal or nonreactive findings may require additional evaluation or referral. We do not promise reassuring results, and testing does not guarantee that additional monitoring will be unnecessary.

The non-stress test is a separate service from our diagnostic obstetric ultrasound and is requested on its own. See all pregnancy and prenatal care, including pregnancy nausea & IV hydration.
